Japanese children low on confidence, survey shows
The Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education (BoE)
has decided to research self-esteem training for
children during the next academic year, following an
international survey revealing that Japanese children are low on confidence.
The research, employing specialists in neuroscience
and other fields and to be carried out in collaboration
with the Tokyo Metropolitan School Personnel
In-Service Training Center and universities, will focus
on how to foster self-confidence in children.
An elementary school will be selected to take part in
the project, and will be used to conduct student
opinion polls and test coaching methods.
The total budget for the project is 4 million yen.
Research conducted by the Japan Youth Research
Institute in 2002 showed that 9.4 percent of
Japanese junior high school students are generally
happy with themselves, compared to 53.5 percent
in the U.S. and 24.3 percent in China.
Further research from last year showed that 29.4
percent of sixth-year elementary and 39.6 percent
of third-year junior high
school students in the metropolitan area do not
consider themselves to have good qualities.
"We'd like to fundamentally clarify how to improve
children's confidence as much as possible, and
influence it using various methods,"
said a BoE spokesman.
