Return to the ring after 10 years

3 years ago in the super crowded Shinagawa Station in Tokyo, someone called my name
" Yoshikawa-san ! ".
It was " Beaver " Mizutani, one of my boxing
students years ago.

He joined my boxing gym when he was 13 or 14 and he got this nickname " Beaver ".
As he turned pro, he fought twice and lost both of
those fights and quit boxing about 10 years ago.

Beaver found me in the station and looked really
excited, telling his colleagues who were going back
to office from lunch that I was his coach and so on.
He looked he was a part of Japanese company
system instead of a lone boxer.

He and I sat a few minutes over coffee and I told him what I was doing - visiting schools to talk about
peace and love, working on crimes in the streets etc - and his eyes shone like a boxer.

A few months later, he came back to the boxing gym for training and said that he wants to fight again.
I said to him " Great idea ! Only when you are
fighting, you are living your life. " " Make sure you
run every day for 2-3 years if you want to win. "

Long story, short.
Tonight he fought in Korakuen Hall in Tokyo after he
lost all his two fights 10 years ago.

何万人も歩いていそうな午後1時ごろの品川駅構内。
3年ほど前、誰かに「吉川さん！」と呼ばれた。
振り返ると、10年ほど前にプロボクサーだった
" ビーバー " が立っていた。
水谷少年は13才か14才で大川ボクシングジムに来ていた。
細くて愛嬌があったから " ビーバー " と名前をつけたら、
みんなが彼をビーバーと呼んだ。

当時はジムにチャンピオンがいて、彼もあこがれた。
20才の頃、プロになり、2度試合に出て、2度負けて、
ボクシングをやめた。
それ以来だった。

ランチ帰りの職場の仲間に 「 オレのコーチだったんだ 」 と
紹介。
すっかり日本の会社社会にはまっているビーバー。

コーヒーを飲んだ時に、学校訪問や 「 こども国連 」 をやって
いることを話したら、彼の目が以前のボクサーの頃のように
光った。

数ヶ月後、ビーバーが 「 もう一度やりたい 」 とジムに戻った。
「 やるなら、2－3年間、毎日走れよ 」 と私。

そのビーバーが、今晩、10年ぶりに後楽園ホールのリングに
立った。

I said to him that the first round is the one.
Finish the fight in the first.

「 第1ラウンドで勝負。 4ラウンドもやりたくねえだろ 」 と私。
「 ハイ 」 と、ビーバー。But he couldn't do it.
He was too tight in shoulders and knees.

でも、力みすぎのビーバーは1ラウンドで
仕事を終えられなかった。Use your footwork. Then, combination blows !

足を使って、連打を！The second round was even worse.
Beaver got a number of blows in his face and belly.

足がしっかり動いてないビーバーの顔と腹にパンチが
飛んでくる。
危ない第2ラウンド。" Listen, Beaver. This next round is the last round.
This 3rd round is the last one.
If you don't knock him out in this round,
you will lose. "
Beaver got scared to the word " lose "
and he fought very well in the third.
Even though he really had 2 more rounds
to go, if you think that you can still do it twice,
you will not win that round.
Each round is the last one. Each minute is the
last moment.

「 ビーバー、次の回で決まる。 この回に倒さなきゃ、
お前は負けだ。 これが最後のラウンドだ 」 と言った。
本当はあと2ラウンドだけど、「 あと2回ある 」 という考えは、
敗北への道。「 負けだ 」 という言葉にビーバーの目が光った。In the third round, Beaver did a very good job.

第3ラウンドのビーバーは良かった。
でもまだ倒せない。

Before the last round, I said " Remember that guy
will come to you like a wounded tiger.
Give all your heart and do everything. "
and I placed my fist on his heart.

最終ラウンドの前。
「 いいか、これで終わりだ。 全部出せ 」
「 相手は死に物狂いで来るぞ！」
「 ちょっとでも気を抜いたら終わりだ 」
と言って、ワセリンの塗られた彼の心臓の上に私の拳をのせて
「 お前のハートで勝負だ！」
第4ラウンド、死に物狂いのビーバーの両腕からは
相手をダウンさせそうなパンチがたくさん出た。

It was a split decision victory.
2対１の判定で勝った。In the dressing room, his boxing buddies
10 years ago came and congratulated him.
Those older ones and the young ones,
they all clapped their hands to Beaver.
控室には、10-20年前の選手たちがお祝いを言いに来た。
本当に久しぶりの顔が並んでいた。
いつの間に彼らは集まっていたんだろう。
そういう古株からも、若い練習生からも、
小さな控室では、自然に拍手がわき上がった。
あまり聞いたことのない、素直で、真剣で、
本当に心のこもったあったかい拍手だ。
ビーバーがやったことが、どんなに大変なことで、
勇敢なことかがみんな痛いほどに分かっているから。
45才を越えて、トレーニングに励んでいるビジネスマンも
泣いていた。

31-year old Beaver will go back to work in the
business district tomorrow, but he is not just
another Japanese salaryman.
He will live as a man.
Congratulations.31才になったビーバーは、
明日から品川の大きなビルの中へ仕事に戻る。
でも、ただのサラリーマンなんかじゃない。
自分と闘って、自分に勝って、自分の悔いや不完全燃焼を、
自分の力で吹き飛ばした。
そういう人間は少ない。

おめでとう、ビーバー！

相手の選手も倒れずによく頑張った。
彼もこの試合で多くを学んで、将来のビーバーになっていく
だろう。

Beaver emailed me and said
