Sports and human

Sports is wonderful.
We come across some greatest human beings
like Tommy Smith, John Carlos and Peter Norman
in Mexico Olympics 1968.

スポーツは素晴らしい。
トミー・スミス、ジョン・カーロス、ピーター・ノーマンのような
立派な人間に出会うことがある。
1968年のメキシコ・オリンピック。

"It (a protest) was in my head the whole year.
We first tried to have a boycott (of the games)
but not everyone was down with that plan.
A lot of athletes thought that winning medals
would supercede or protect them from racism.
But even if you won the medal, it ain't going to
save your momma.
It ain't going to save your sister or children.
It might give you fifteen minutes of fame,
but what about the rest of your life?
I'm not saying that they didn't have the right
to follow their dreams, but to me the medal
was nothing but the carrot on a stick."

差別を続ける非人間的国家の国旗は見ない。
代わりに黒手袋をはめた拳 (こぶし) を突き上げる。
靴は脱ぎ、ソックスで立つ。
それは彼らの貧困の象徴。

「人が差別され、平等な生活がなく、子供たちが救われない
社会では意味がない」というメダリストたちの主張は、
理解なきオリンピック委員会にメダルをはく奪された。
もちろん、そんなことは見越してのアクションを起こしたわけだ。

彼らの勇気ある社会的行動が公民権運動を促進。
社会はうんと良くなった。

"We wanted the world to know that in
Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee,
South Central Los Angeles, Chicago, that
people were still walking back and forth
in poverty without even the necessary
clothes to live.
The beads were for those individuals that
were lynched, or killed that no-one said a
prayer for, that were hung and tarred.
It was for those thrown off the side of the
boats in the middle passage. We were
trying to wake the country up and wake
the world up to."

It's athletes' and anybody's duty to do some
good to the society.
Medals or prizes are like an accessory.

オーストラリアの白人選手ピーター・ノーマンはふたりの
アメリカ人の考えを聞いて、その場で彼らの仲間のバッジを
胸につけ、彼らの行動に加わった。
みんな、「人として」立派な人間。

当時7才だった私が彼らから学んだものは本当に感謝
しないと。
それは正義と勇気。
それがその後のスポーツ (& 他のすべて) との関わり方の
基礎になった。
当時の白黒のテレビではほんの一瞬小さく扱われただけ
だった。
また、彼らの行動を「けしからん選手がいる」という感じの
報道だった。
真実は時間が経てば分かる。
逆に言えるのは、人は時間が経たないと分からない。

スポーツでも芸術でも学問でも、その目標は「社会に役立つ」
人間になること。
ひとりでも、正しいことを貫く人間になること。
黙って知らんぷり、自分だけ良ければ主義じゃない。

日本もスポーツが盛んで、それはいいこと。
日本の問題はその軍隊的方法。
コーチ、先輩の命令は絶対。
正しくても間違っていても関係ない。
言うことを聞かなければ、いじめられ、罰を受け、仲間外れに。
結局は個人を封じ込め、意見はご法度。
中学校の部活動あたりからそれが活発になり、
大人になってもスポーツ連盟が彼らを縛りつける。
結局は社会的には非社会的な人間が大量生産。

たまにはいいスポーツマンもいるが足りない。
スケートの清水選手は報酬を地雷撤去運動に寄付した。

部活がもっと人間的、社会的であれば、この社会はとっくの
昔にもっと良くなっているはず。
だって、日曜も夏休みも毎日、部活をやってるんだから。
その結果が今の世の中。
