25 Women from Hiroshima

There are some stories that have to be told.
USA invited 25 women from Hiroshima for plastic
surgeory on May 5, 1955 less than 10 years
after the atomic bomb was dropped.They did 133 operations for 1 year and 6 months
period free of charge.My good friend and great mentor Mr. Eli Wallach also
told me a number of times about these ladies
that he met in the backstage when he was
playing an Okinawan in the Broadway show
" The Teahouse of the August Moon ".Each time, he tells me the story, he says to me
" Eiji, listen. That was the dumbest thing we've ever
done. "
Eli served in Europe during the war.広めるべき話がある。
戦後10年に満たない1955年5月5日、アメリカは25人の
被爆した広島の女性をアメリカに招待した。
1年半をかけて計133回の手術が無償で行われた。
25人の1年6ヶ月の滞在費も無料。ブロードウェーとハリウッドの名優イーライ・ウォラックは何度
会っても、私に話をしてくれる。 彼女らにブロードウェーの
舞台裏で紹介された時のことを。
第2次大戦中は兵士として南フランスにいたイーライはいつも私に言う 「 われわれが、あの爆弾を落としたことは人類史上で
一番バカなことだった 」
Co-captain Mr. Robert A. Lewis was deeply regretful
about the event and he donated helping money
to those ladies in Hiroshima.
From the way he behaved in front of Hiroshima
people and from the way he was so silent,
you can tell how he was feeling then.
TV station decided not to show any commercial
films while this program is on air.
原爆を落とした飛行機のパイロット、ロバート・ルイスさんは
自分自身と職場の人たちから広島への寄付金を集めてくれた。
彼の何も口に出せないようすが、その悲しみの深さを見せる。We mustn't hate.
We must love.

憎んじゃいけない。
憎んでも前に進まない。Thank you, Mr. Stephen Okazaki for reminding us
these stories that need to be told now.
Mr. Okazaki the Oscar-winner made the
documentary " White Light, Black Rain ".
PS. I have never heard anything like Japan
inviting injured people from Asia, China or
elsewhere.
What I keep hearing is very loud voices saying
that Japan has never invaded anyone and so on.

I have never heard about any Japanese
ex-soldiers, apologizing to anyone.

I have never heard any comments within Japan
dropping bombs all over Asia was wrong.
Instead, many adults say " Japan should have
bombed US continent right after Pearl Harbor "

There were 100.000 Korean people living in
Hiroshima when the bomb was dropped.
Some Japanese military doctors kicked them
out of the hospital.
70.000 Korean people got the radiation and
40.000 passed away.
Japanese government didn't do anything
fair to those who were forced to live in the
foreign land far away from home.

Japanese people who got radiation from the
bomb were segregated and isolated on
everything. No job. No friends. No communications.
So that the life later on was very difficult.

Japanese government still deny approving
a number of radiation diseased patients
because they don't want to look after them.

This country has such a long way to go.
Or no place to go.
『 ヒロシマ ナガサキ 』 というドキュメンタリーを作ったのは
スティーブン・オカザキさん。
人としての使命を果たしている。

日本によるアジア侵略から70年ほどが経過したが、
侵略により傷つけた人を日本によんで治療をしたという話は
聞いたことがない。
「 侵略なんかしてない 」 と叫ぶ人たちは耳にしすぎるほど。

ロバート・ルイスさんのように自分が落とした爆弾について
10年も経たないうちに、被害にあった人に謝り、握手し、
寄付を手渡した日本人の話は聞いたことがない。

イーライのように 「 あの爆弾は大バカだ 」 と言って、
日本軍による爆撃について話す日本人は見たこともない。

よく耳にするのは 「 真珠湾攻撃の直後にアメリカ本土を
爆撃するべきだった 」 と日本の大人。 本気で言っている。

日本人は原爆の被爆者 (ひばくしゃ) の人たちさえ差別した。
当時広島に住まわされていた10万人の韓国の人たちも
病院から放り出されたり、治療を受けさせてもらえないなどの
扱いを受けた。
異国に連れてこられたせいで、広島では7万人、
長崎では2万人の韓国・朝鮮の方々が被爆した。
広島では4万人の韓国の人たちが亡くなった。
日本政府の態度は 「 知ったことか 」
政府だけではない。
一般の人たちも日本人の犠牲者の数は何度も言うが、
韓国の人たちの人数について話す教育者どころか、そんな
日本人に出会ったことがない。

戦争の責任者である日本の国は、被爆した人を助けたくない
から被爆手帳という、被害認定の手帳もなかなか出さない。

この国は根底が狂い過ぎ。
上から下まで。

じゃあ、何がそれを修復できる？
